Any penalty for academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, is based on verifiable evidence and the result of consultation between the faculty member, the student, the responsible academic dean or associate dean, and in some instances the Provost. The University provides avenues for students to appeal any decision they deem unfair. What penalty a student receives will vary depending on the type of infraction and whether the student has any previous violations of the academic integrity policy. It is your responsibility to read and become familiar with the University's policy on plagiarism (included in the Student Code of Conduct) and any policies that each academic unit or instructor may provide.
Possible penalties may include:
- A zero or grade of "F" on the work in question,
- A grade of "F" in the course,
- Disciplinary reprimand,
- Suspension from the course,
- Disciplinary probation,
- Suspension in abeyance from the university,
- Permanent expulsion from the university.
Any academic dishonesty violation represents a serious offense. Being knowledgeable about academic dishonesty and ensuring that you avoid it helps you have a more successful and less stressful academic career at your institution.
